Description

M81, Bodes Galaxy, is a spiral galaxy discovered by Johann Bode in 1774. It lies 12 million light years away in the constellation Ursa Major and contains a supermassive black hole with an estimated mass 70 million times that of the Sun. A supernova was observed in M81 in 1993. M81 is the largest of a group of 34 galaxies located in Ursa Major, which is part of the Virgo Supercluster of galaxies along with the Milky Way. M81 shines at magnitude 6.9.

M82, the Cigar Galaxy, is a starburst galaxy 12 million light years away in the constellation Ursa Major and was discovered by Johann Bode in 1774. M82 is a spiral galaxy seen nearly edge-on with extensive star formation occurring as a result of interactions with its neighbor M81. M82 shines at magnitude 8.4. A supernova was observed in 2014.
